Something New
Since my little mini-epiphany last week regarding Big and the current direction of my life I have been looking for ways to make little changes. I'm in a mindset to experiment and try new things. And seeing as how I have a history of changing my hairstyle every time a serious (or potentially serious) relationship with a man ends I figured why not do something totally new.
In looking at my hair I noticed that while my natural color suits be perfectly it just feels a little dark and drab at this time and I need a bit of a lift. So I figured, what the Hell, I'm going to lighten my hair. I have only ever colored my hair once, and that was when I was 13 and it was ghastly and just one of those experiments young teens do. No, this time I wanted something lighter but complimentary and relatively natural looking, especially since I would not be coloring my beard (which is already a natural red-blonde-brunette mix). No platinum blonde or radioactive red here. I needed a color I could feel good about, one that would give my face a glow and a sense of radiating confidence. A tall order for a dye job but hey it is possible.
Tuesday night I went to CVS with Daphne and we spent 20 minutes pouring over hair color products. I wanted something a little golden but that was in the brunette family and had some reddish highlight to it. What we finally ended up with was a natural light caramel brown by Clairol (Nice'N Easy #118B!). I had to wait until last night to apply the dye as I had worn gel in my hair on Tuesday and in order for the color to take I needed to have dry, non-freshly washed hair. Which meant going with no product on my head tonight.
The dying process went well, and despite there being a few lighter places the color took to my hair. I am relatively happy with the outcome. It is still a little darker than what I wanted and some of the reddish tone is a bit strong. But over all not bad for $5 dye out of a box. I think as this starts to fade and wash out in the next few weeks that I'll go to a salon and have a professional job done. I don't think I'm going to get the exact affect I want from Clairol alone.
I'm happy though. I feel more radiant and the color looks fab on me. See for yourself, below are the before and after shots:
