The Long Walk Home

If I weren't so fucking tired I'd be fucking furious! Today is the day before Thanksgiving and in honor of that my office closed at 1 pm. i should have left then and gotten home by 2 and had plenty of time to prep for tomorrow. But no, instead I inadvertently opened Pandora's Web Box and ended up getting stuck there till 2 pm working on a page. When I got to the Metro is was very crowded and I opted to catch the next train. Big mistake! Turns out after that one very crowded train left my stop, the one that was supposedly 2 minutes behind it broke down!

I was livid, but attempted to be calm (while the man in front of me kept bumping into me with his fucking rolling suitcase — I was seconds way from pushing him onto the electrified third rail...). What was the point in getting angry? Well after 10 minutes and Metro having to bar the escalators going down to the platform (it was more crowded then Wal-Mart during a 75% off sale) the station manager comes on the loud speaker and announces not one but two trains at Metro Center (which was a few stops prior to where I was) were having technical difficulty and had to be offloaded and removed from the track. They weren't sure how much longer it would be. Gee thanks Metro, and my hard earned money that helps fund you is going where again?

For those of you not native to DC this means that there was NO RAIL SERVICE to Virginia (and all the DC metro stations south and West of Metro Center). So everybody who lives in VA trying to get home couldn't or had to leave the station and try and find buses that would take them to whatever station they were parked at. Thus was my plight. I ended up leaving the station, going back to my office and consulting the online Metro service guide. I had two choices: 1) wait 20 minutes for a bus that would take 20 to deliver me to Rosslyn where I could catch another bus that would take me to the station where I had parked my car, or 2) I could walk the 3 miles to the Roslyn station and catch a bus to my station from there. I was so antsy to get moving that I opted for the second.

In hindsight I should have just waited because it took me 45 minutes to walk to Roslyn and I still had to wait another 20 minutes in the cold for my bus (which ended up being 15 minutes late on top of everything else). The walk was good for me and I got my exercise that is for sure and I got to walk through Georgetown. But in total between the walking and the bus trip to my station, then the drive home it took me THREE HOURS TO GET HOME TONIGHT!!

I am of course too exhausted to do anything and will have to pack and clean tomorrow before I head to Daphne's for Thanksgiving dinner. On an amusing side note though, while I was at the drive through at Taco Bell picking up dinner it started to snow at the exact same time Saki Takaoka's Sleepless Beauty In The Woods came on the CD I was playing. Not only does the song talk about snow falling on the town but the scene from Megazone 23 III it was used in also featured falling snow. It was one of those Anime moments. Hey, how often does one get to have soundtracked scenes in life?

Your Rants & Comments

I cannot believe you walked all that way. I can't even remember what I was doing that day. (I know I had class from 10 to 11). Did you try calling? I would have picked you up.
