Retro Redo's
If there is one universal truth in life it is that remakes of old movies and super hero/comic book movies are almost never a good thing, especially in modern Hollywood. Particularly when they all herald from a long bygone era. This and next summer's anticipated releases are no exception.
Don't believe me? Well take a look at what's coming out this June:
- Bewitched — That classic 60's TV sitcom has been turned into a movie starring Nicole Kidman and Shirley MacLaine. At least the casting of Shirley as Andorra is very apropos, but still, remaking a 60's sitcom into a movie?
- Sin City — Starring Bruce Willis, is a once popular 90's, "underground" comic book series turned big screen film. Just based on the trailers alone you can see this one relies heavily on special effects and computer animation to carry it. And not to sound ageist, but isn't Bruce Willis no longer believable as an action hero?
- Herbie: Fully Loaded — Yet another sequel to the never-ending Disney 1960's classic about a talking Volkswagen Bug starring non-other than Lindsay Lohan. 'Nuff said.
And if those aren't painful enough just check out the list of movies you can look forward to in 2006:
- Fantastic Four — Yet another epic Marvel super hero comic book turned movie. No word yet on who plays what.
- Superman Returns — Because there haven't been enough Superman movies and TV series as is, we have to make yet ANOTHER one. Apparently this production has been in trouble for years so who knows it may not even come to fruition.
- I Dream Of Jeanie — Yes, yet another quirky 60's sitcom turned movie. The casting couch jury is still out as to whom will don Jeanie's 60's pink harem couture but apparently one of the top contenders is... yep, you guessed it, Lindsay Lohan!
Don't those sound exciting? I know I am just bubbling over with anticipation. Please! People we have got to just say no to Hollywood and its bad movies. It's time to stop consuming this manufactured crap and time we all started watching independent films. At least if they are bad you can blame it on the low budgets which Hollywood movies lack.
